PERSONAL UMBRELLA INSURANCE
Extra liability protection for Truckee, Tahoe, Reno & Northern Nevada households.
Home and auto policies include liability coverage, but some households want an additional layer above those underlying limits. A personal umbrella policy can provide extra liability protection over eligible home, auto and other personal policies, subject to the umbrella policy’s terms and required underlying coverage.
For mountain households with multiple vehicles, teen drivers, second homes, rental properties, boats or other higher-liability exposures, it can be worth reviewing whether the current liability structure still matches the real risk.
WHEN TO CONSIDER IT
Umbrella coverage is about the liability side of the household.
Multiple Vehicles or Drivers
More drivers and vehicles can mean more opportunities for a serious auto liability claim, especially when newer or younger drivers are in the household.
Homes, Second Homes & Rentals
Multiple properties, rental exposure, guests, snow and ice, recreation and out-of-area ownership can all add liability considerations.
Boats & Recreational Risks
Some umbrella programs can sit over eligible boats, recreational vehicles or other personal liability exposures when the underlying policies and carrier rules allow it.
Higher Assets or Income
Households with more assets, income or future earnings to protect may want liability limits that go beyond the standard home and auto policy limits.
HOW IT FITS
An umbrella usually sits above required underlying liability limits.
Umbrella carriers generally require certain liability limits on the underlying auto, homeowners, landlord, boat or other eligible policies. Those required limits vary by carrier. If an underlying policy does not meet the umbrella requirements, the household coverage may need to be adjusted before the umbrella can be placed.
UMBRELLA VS. EXCESS LIABILITY
The words are related, but the policy forms are not always identical.
Some policies provide excess liability only over listed underlying coverage. A true umbrella form may provide broader protection in certain situations, but the scope varies by carrier and policy. We compare the actual form and underlying requirements rather than assuming every umbrella policy works the same way.
WHAT WE REVIEW
Start with the policies that already carry your liability exposure.
We look at household drivers and vehicles, home and property policies, rental properties, boats or recreational risks, current liability limits and any existing umbrella or excess policy. The goal is to see whether the pieces line up before simply adding another policy.
PERSONAL COVERAGE REVIEW
Want to know whether your current liability limits are enough?
Start with your home or auto review and let us know you want personal umbrella coverage included. If you already have an umbrella, we can review how it fits with the underlying policies.
